We are leaving the UK due to BREXIT

Here at ClickMoves we have seen a 41% increase in the number of EU citizens moving out of the UK.

On 29 March 2019, the UK is set to officially leave the EU.  Even though a Brexit transition period will run until 31 December 2020, during which time EU nationals will retain free movement rights in the UK, we have seen an unprecedented number of EU Nationals relocate from the UK, and move to France, Germany, Spain and Switzerland.

Moving to Paris

Catherine from Marseille is currently moving to Paris with Clickmoves, and after completing the packing this morning she explained to me that “I work for a international investment bank and they are planning move upto 40% of the team over to mainland European offices. My bank, and many others, have simply lost confidence in the UK to successfully negotiate an exit strategy that will be good for international business – so the decision to move to Paris was clear”

Moving to Rome

Marco, another ClickMoves client advised me that his decision to move to Italy had been purely personal “I’m a freelance graphic designer so I can be based anywhere in world – I send my work to clients electronically, and I can talk with them in real time or over video, so there’s just no need for me to stay in London. Frankly I love the city and I have many friends in London but at the end of the day the uncertainty of BREXIT has just pushed me over the edge, and so i’m moving to Rome”.

An Exodus?

Of course we are seeing more and more EU citizens leave the UK, but we are not expecting a mass exodus because EU citizens will continue to have freedom of movement until the end of 2020. However, we have seen a very significant drop in the number of EU citizens moving to the UK, and this is a great cause of concern for the UK economy moving forward as many foreign companies are delaying or even cancelling their plans to invest in the UK.
