Moving to Portugal & Madeira

Posted on March 20, 2024

Here at ClickMoves Towers we’ve seen a huge increase in the number of enquiries from Brits moving to Portugal, and Portuguese relocating back to Portugal. To the extent that we are currently sending 3 large removal trucks a week from the UK to Portugal, making deliveries throughout mainland Portugal and Madeira. So we thought it would be useful to send out a post explaining why so many folks are moving to Portugal, and moving to Madeira, and what its like to live there.

Lets start with the cost of living

Here’s some ideas on what to budget for if you are planning on relocating to Portugal. Portugal offers one of the lowest cost of living in Western Europe, a couple can comfortably live off €2,000 to €2,500 a month in Lisbon or Porto (cheaper if if you’re living outside the major cities).  A one bedroom apartment might cost you around €500 a month, and eating out is not only fantatsic but frelatively cheap. For your grocery shopping, there’s an abundance of local markets with a wide range of locally produced products, and a good bottle of table wine can be bought for €4 to €5.

Buying a property in Portugal

You  can get great value for money if you planning on moving to Portugal and buying a property, although these days that doesn’t automatically qualify you for a resident visa any more, but if you’re investing more than €500k you should qualify for a golden visa. If you are thinking of buying a property in Portugal try these guys https://www.portugalproperty.com. And if you’re in the market for property in Madeira, either as an investment property, for your retirement, then talk to https://madeira.estate/en/buying-in-madeira/ Just like in any developed European country, the process of buying a home or property in Madeira is secure and relatively straightforward.

Working and earning in Portugal

Its possible to live and work in Portugal, but not easy as you’ll need the correct visa, and in most cases a good level of spoken Portuguese. Average salaries are a little lower the the UK, but the enconomy is good (hence the reason that many Portuguese nationals are moving back). There’s a big IT sector, obviously tourism, but in addition, Portugal has made itself a hib for the Global Nomad working and living in the country.

Retiring to Portugal & The Golden Visa

According to our friends at Henley Global the Portugal Golden Residence Permit Program (commonly known as the Portugal Golden Visa Program) is a five-year residence by investment program for non-EU nationals. The residence permit gives the right to live, work, and study in Portugal and allows free circulation in Europe’s Schengen Area. Furthermore, the program only requires an average of seven days per year stay in Portugal over this period, which can also count towards citizenship eligibility after five years. Investmnet requirement is upwards of €250,000, and the benefits a Golden Visa bring are:

  • Visa-free travel in Europe’s Schengen Area and the right to live, work, and study in Portugal
  • Eligibility to apply for citizenship after five years as a legal resident while keeping other citizenship(s)
  • Low physical presence requirement (seven days during the first year of residence and 14 days for the two subsequent years, which can count towards citizenship eligibility after five years)
  • Excellent international and Portuguese schools and universities
  • High quality of life, local cuisine and wines, rich culture, mild climate, and a high level of security
  • International quality healthcare clinics and hospitals
